Gary Vaynerchuk is one of the most popular serial entrepreneur and digital marketing moguls in the world today.

If you’re into business and entrepreneurship, you would definitely have heard of this brash, polarizing social media celebrity.

He has a net worth of $160 million and a cult following, with their eyes glued to his every move, Tweet and live video.

Some people find him loud and obnoxious, while others hail him as their idol – a living embodiment of hustle and hard work.

He’s come from setting up a lemonade stand franchise at 7 to single-handedly growing his father’s wine business from $3 million to $60 million.

One of the things that I’ve always found fascinating about Gary is that he preaches patience.

For the uninitiated, it almost seems highly paradoxical… because he’s extremely persistent.

For one, he’s always on the go.

His energy seems to be superhuman, placing a premium on the ability to work no less than 16 hours a day.

His messages are intense and motivational – but they’re very consistent: work.

Work, work, work. Go, go, go.

Work hard, eat sh*t, keep going… for years… until you see your dreams become a reality.

At first, that doesn’t seem like patience to me.

Growing up I’ve always perceived ‘having patience’ to be taking it slow and steady.

Timing is everything. Tolerate minor difficulties. Harden yourself. There’s no need to pursue your goals mindlessly because God will reward you if you are patient.

Wait. Wait. Wait.

Bide your time because ‘good things come to those who wait’.

Gary doesn’t exactly clarify how long we have to be patient or how hard we have to work.

And for most of us – that seems like two opposing schools of thought.

Persistence vs Patience

How do you be persistent and patient at the same time?

How do you be a Type-A go-getter who goes out and SEIZES opportunities with no hesitation… while at the same time be the patient stoic who is cautious and not in a hurry?

It was only recently through some reflection that I manage to reconcile these two opposing traits and encapsulate Gary’s philosophy to be a simple recipe for peak performance.

Persistent With Output, Patience With Outcomes

The phrase is this: Be persistent with the output, be patient with the outcomes.

In fact, it’s a very simple distinction… between your output (how much work you put in) and the outcomes (the results of your hard work).

‘Be persistent with the output’ means having a sense of burning urgency when it comes to taking action.

It means seizing every waking hour of your day to be productive. Place a high value on your time and devote it in the pursuit of achieving your goals.

‘Be patient with the outcomes’ means having little concern over WHEN you will see the fruits of your labour.

It is having faith and trust that if you truly work persistently and sincerely, you will eventually reap the rewards in time.

As Gary would say: you’re ‘playing the long game’.

This means you’re willing to wait as long as possible (years, or even decades) to experience ‘success’.

This philosophy is amazing because Gary sheds light on the ‘instant gratification’ culture that we’re living in today.

The reality is that many people lose motivation quickly because they don’t work as hard as they can, but expect results to come quickly.

But that is not how life works.

Understand that everything that is worthy in life takes time and effort to achieve.

Remember: make the most of the 24 hours that you have, but be willing to wait as long as it takes to reap the rewards.

Summary

Be persistent with the output, be patient with the outcomes.
